This is not a traditional Java development role. We are looking for an exceptional Senior Java Backend Engineer who combines deep backend engineering expertise with hands-on experience using modern AI coding assistants and LLM technologies. You will play a key role in defining how AI is adopted across our engineering organisation - introducing AI-assisted development practices, deploying LLM-based solutions, defining project structures for AI agents, and helping our development teams become significantly more productive, while continuing to build our cloud-native logistics platform.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Lead the adoption of AI across the software engineering organisation.
- Design and implement LLM-powered development workflows.
- Define project structures and best practices for AI-assisted software development.
- Build reusable prompts, agent workflows, and coding standards for AI tools.
- Evaluate and introduce new AI technologies that improve developer productivity.
- Train and mentor developers in the effective use of AI coding assistants.
- Establish engineering guidelines for AI-generated code quality and security.
- Prototype new LLM-based solutions, including solutions built on local LLMs.
- Design and develop high-performance Java backend applications using Spring Boot.
- Design and implement scalable microservices and secure REST APIs.
- Build event-driven systems using Apache Kafka.
- Design and optimise PostgreSQL databases, including performance tuning.
- Build and deploy cloud-native applications on AWS.
- Participate in architecture discussions and technical design reviews.
- Perform code reviews and mentor other developers.
- Ensure software quality through automated testing and CI/CD best practices.
Key Requirements
- 6+ years of professional experience with Java and Spring Boot.
- Extensive hands-on experience with AI-assisted software development, using tools like OpenAI Codex, Claude Code, or equivalent, with a consistent strategy for code
generation and code review. - Experience with multi-agent configuration for development workflows.
- Experience integrating Model Context Protocol (MCP) extensions into development tooling (e.g., syncing Figma designs with Codex).
- Experience hosting or working with private LLMs on AWS; knowledge of Amazon Bedrock highly preferred.
- Knowledge of vector databases and vector distance calculations for tasks like data interpretation and product matching.
- Experience building AI agents to automate repetitive, non-coding operational tasks (e.g., updating ETAs).
- AI certifications are highly desirable.
- Experience with Spring Framework and REST API development.
- Experience with Apache Kafka and microservices architecture.
- Experience with PostgreSQL, database design, and performance tuning.
- Experience with Maven and JUnit.
- Working knowledge of AWS for application deployment, including ECS/EKS, S3, API Gateway, and CloudFront.
- Experience with Docker and Terraform is desirable.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and Git in an Agile/Scrum environment.
Nice to Have
- Experience with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG).
- Experience designing internal developer platforms or tooling that incorporates AI assistance.
- Experience working in logistics, transportation, customs, or e-commerce platforms
Special Requirements for the Role
- Passionate about Artificial Intelligence and constantly experimenting with the latest AI technologies and techniques.
- Enjoys improving developer productivity and has excellent software architecture skills.
- Writes clean, maintainable, and scalable code.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Can work independently while mentoring other engineers.
- Communicates effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Takes ownership and drives innovation - comfortable investigating and prototyping unproven AI approaches for real business problems.

- Exposure to challenging distributed systems at scale.
- Latest Java ecosystem and AWS technologies.
- AI-first engineering environment, with real ownership over how AI is integrated into the team's workflow.
- Collaborative and highly technical team.
- Opportunity to influence architecture and engineering standards.
- Competitive compensation based on experience.
